Betty Nippi-Albright Quits Sask. NDP, Sits as Independent MLA
Betty Nippi-Albright Leaves Sask. NDP to Sit as Independent

Saskatchewan Centre MLA Betty Nippi-Albright has announced her departure from the New Democratic Party, choosing to sit as an independent member of the legislative assembly. The decision, made public through a Facebook post on Tuesday, stems from her inability to continue supporting the leadership direction of Carla Beck.

Reasons for Leaving

Nippi-Albright, who was first elected in 2020, explained that her choice came after extensive reflection on how she could best serve the community of Saskatoon Centre and the constituents who placed their trust in her. She emphasized that as Saskatchewan’s only Indigenous female MLA, her unique perspectives—rooted in academic training, health experience, and lived experience—are crucial for the province.

“Over time, I have not felt the support or respect required to carry out this work in a good way,” she wrote in her statement. She further noted that she has raised important issues for a long time, many of which did not receive attention until recently. Sitting as an independent will allow her to continue advocating for Saskatoon Centre, for Inherent and Treaty Rights holders, and for those whose voices are too often overlooked.

Role and Impact

Prior to her departure, Nippi-Albright served as the NDP’s critic for mental health and addictions. Her move to the independent bench marks a significant shift in the Saskatchewan legislative landscape, reducing the NDP’s caucus size and highlighting internal dissent over leadership.

Nippi-Albright, a member of the Kinistin Saulteaux Nation, reiterated her commitment to representing her constituents and advancing Indigenous rights. Her decision has sparked discussions about party dynamics and the representation of Indigenous voices within Saskatchewan politics.
