Where Have All the Flags Gone?
In a letter to the editor, Yvonne Temple-Vermeulen of Ottawa expressed dismay at the lack of Canadian flags displayed during Canada Day celebrations. She recalled her first Canada Day in Ottawa in 1982, when a sea of flags adorned buildings and houses, creating a festive atmosphere on Parliament Hill. Driving through the city last Saturday, she noticed hardly any flags on buildings or homes. She questioned whether patriotism is only shown during parades, protests, or soccer games, and urged Canadians to display their pride more consistently.
Anti-American Sentiment and Brady Tkachuk
Cathy Haley of Ottawa commented on the anti-American sentiment directed at hockey player Brady Tkachuk. She attributed this to former U.S. President Donald Trump's policies, which have fueled Canadian nationalism. Haley noted that Ottawa, as the capital, is particularly sensitive to political actions. She compared Tkachuk's treatment to that of Auston Matthews, whose criticism has subsided. Haley suggested that if Tkachuk had stayed in Ottawa, he would have been cheered, but his planned move makes his departure less painful than previous player exits like Alfredsson, Karlsson, or Stone.
Ginette Leroux of Kanata agreed with Brian Lilley's points about Tkachuk. She expressed anger over the Tkachuk brothers' brawl at the start of the Four Nations game against Canada, which she saw as disrespectful. Leroux questioned whether Tkachuk's lackluster playoff performance (zero points) was intentional to facilitate a trade. She concluded that she is not sad to see him go.
A Not-So-Fond Farewell
Leroux further criticized Tkachuk, stating that booing the American anthem during the Olympics was wrong, but the Tkachuk brothers' actions in the Four Nations series crossed a line. She noted that the brawl seemed targeted at Canada, possibly due to the anthem booing or Canada being a threat. She contrasted this with Auston Matthews, who did not receive similar support from teammates when injured. Leroux speculated that Tkachuk's lack of effort in the playoffs might have been a deliberate move to force a trade, and she expressed relief at his departure.
