Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities have conducted searches at both the residence and workplace of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's chief of staff, Andrii Yermak, creating significant political complications for Kyiv's leadership during wartime.
Anti-Corruption Investigation Expands
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office confirmed they executed search warrants at Yermak's office locations. Yermak himself acknowledged through Telegram that investigators also entered his personal apartment as part of their probe.
"The investigators are facing no obstacles," Yermak stated on the messaging platform, emphasizing his full cooperation with the ongoing investigation. He noted that his legal representatives were present throughout the search procedures.
These developments occur within the context of a major $100 million corruption scandal investigation focused on Ukraine's energy sector. The probe has already implicated several high-ranking Ukrainian officials.
Political Fallout and Internal Pressure
The corruption investigation has generated substantial political challenges for President Zelenskyy as he simultaneously manages military operations against Russian forces and diplomatic efforts to maintain Western support. The timing is particularly sensitive given ongoing peace negotiations with international involvement.
Earlier this month, Zelenskyy confronted unprecedented resistance from within his own political party when investigators released detailed findings from their energy sector corruption inquiry. Although Yermak has not been formally accused of any misconduct, numerous senior lawmakers from Zelenskyy's party have demanded he assume responsibility for the scandal to rebuild public confidence.
Some political figures warned that failure to remove Yermak could trigger a party分裂, potentially jeopardizing the president's parliamentary majority. Despite these pressures, Zelenskyy has maintained his support for his chief of staff.
Yermak's Central Role in Ukrainian Government
Andrii Yermak represents one of Ukraine's most influential political figures and plays a crucial role in international discussions, particularly those involving United States officials. His relationship with Zelenskyy dates back over fifteen years, beginning when Yermak practiced law while exploring television production opportunities and Zelenskyy enjoyed fame as a popular comedian and actor.
Yermak initially managed foreign affairs within Zelenskyy's first presidential administration before receiving promotion to chief of staff in February 2020. Since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, he has accompanied the president on every international trip, with Zelenskyy's unwavering trust rendering Yermak's position seemingly unassailable.
Domestically, government officials describe Yermak as the president's primary gatekeeper, and he is widely believed to have selected all senior government appointments, including prime ministers and cabinet members. This investigation marks neither the first scrutiny of individuals connected to Yermak nor the presidential office, with two former deputies—Oleh Tatarov and Rostyslav Shurma—having left government service in 2024 following corruption investigations.
A third deputy, Andrii Smyrnov, remains employed by Yermak despite facing bribery and other misconduct investigations.
