Morning Joe Panelists Deride GOP's Newly Created 'America First Award' for Trump
MS Now's "Morning Joe" panelists struggled to contain their laughter on Thursday as they sharply criticized Republicans for honoring President Donald Trump with a freshly invented "America First Award." Co-host Mika Brzezinski reacted with her palm pressed against her face, exclaiming, "Stop! They did not make up another award for him!" This came in response to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) presenting the honor at a National Republican Congressional Committee fundraiser the previous day.
A Golden Statue for a 'Golden Era'
Speaker Johnson described the award, symbolized by a golden statue, as "appropriate for the new golden era in America" and announced it would be given out annually. The GOP's fabricated accolade was quickly mocked across social media platforms, adding to a series of questionable honors bestowed upon Trump during his second term. These include the new FIFA Peace Prize and a second-hand Nobel Peace Prize from Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, an actual laureate.
Representative Seth Magaziner commented on the situation, posting on social media, "They have to treat the President like a child. So embarrassing for everyone involved."
Scarborough's Sarcastic Take on the Awards
MS Now host Joe Scarborough joked that Trump was honored with the "America First Award" by Republicans "because the FIFA Peace Prize award has gone so well" and "since then, hell has rained down like never before." He elaborated sarcastically, "Peace Prize before Venezuela? Before Iran? And now the America First Prize, of course, defined not just in the past couple years, 'defined for a century' as politicians in America who do not go to war, who focus at home instead." Scarborough added, "So now they're giving another award. This is like giving me the 'Brevity is the Soul of Wit Award.' It just doesn't fit!"
Accusations of Infantilizing the President
The panel erupted in laughter at Scarborough's remarks before co-host Willie Geist accused the MAGA movement of "infantilizing" the president. Geist stated, "Here's a trophy, here's an iPad to watch bombs exploding in Iran to color your view of how the war is going. They treat him like a child. If I were him, I would be offended by it, but I don't think he is." This critique highlights broader concerns about how Trump is perceived and honored within certain political circles, with the panelists viewing the award as a patronizing gesture rather than a genuine accolade.
