Ex-Liberal Minister Randy Boissonnault Wins $450K Default Judgment in Defamation Suit
Boissonnault Wins $450K Judgment Against Ex-Partner

Former Liberal cabinet minister Randy Boissonnault has secured a significant legal victory in his battle to clear his name, obtaining a default judgment against his former business partner. The court order, granted by Justice George R. Fraser, awards Boissonnault nearly $450,000 in damages and legal costs and permanently bars the defendant from repeating false claims.

A Reputation and Career in Ruins

Boissonnault, the former MP for Edmonton Centre, describes 2024 as the worst year of his life, surpassing even the personal turmoil of coming out as a gay man in his late twenties. The crisis stemmed from allegations investigated by a parliamentary committee that he had maintained an interest in Global Health Imports, a medical-supply company he co-founded, while serving as a minister, violating conflict-of-interest rules.

The claims were fueled by his ex-partner, Stephen Anderson, who sent text messages to prospective clients suggesting "Randy" was involved with the company during his time in office. Anderson also made unfounded claims about Boissonnault's Indigenous lineage. The scandal forced Boissonnault to step down from his cabinet post and ultimately decide not to seek re-election in the 2025 federal election.

The Path to a Default Judgment

In response, Boissonnault launched a defamation lawsuit, arguing that Anderson had fabricated the stories to damage him. Anderson failed to file a statement of defence, leading Boissonnault's legal team to seek a default judgment. Justice Fraser's order, issued in December 2025, requires Anderson to sign a statement admitting he lied about Boissonnault's involvement with Global Health Imports after the MP's election in 2021.

Furthermore, the court has issued a permanent injunction. The defendant is permanently enjoined from making, publishing, or broadcasting any false statements about Boissonnault. He is also prohibited from using Boissonnault's name in correspondence with third parties, except under strict conditions of confidentiality with legal or financial advisers or when compelled by law.

A Victory with a Missing Defendant

The major hurdle now is enforcing the judgment. Anderson's current whereabouts are unknown, creating a practical challenge for Boissonnault's lawyers. They must locate him to have him sign the crucial statement that forms the cornerstone of Boissonnault's reputation rehabilitation.

Despite the monetary award, Boissonnault's primary focus remains on restoring his honour. "There is no relationship left between us whatsoever," Boissonnault stated, reflecting on the profound personal and professional cost. "And the association with him cost me my political career." This legal ruling represents a critical, though incomplete, step in his mission for vindication following a devastating year.
