An Ontario special education teacher has been sentenced to three years in prison for sexually exploiting a student 31 years his junior. Tony Paniccia, 49, pleaded guilty in January to three counts of sexual exploitation for arranging late-night meetings with the teen in his car in early 2024.
Details of the Offenses
The court heard that Paniccia, who headed the special education department at an Ontario high school, first met the student for hugs, touches, and kisses during two encounters. After the second meeting, the teen sent him a Telegram message saying she did not want to meet again outside school because she felt disgusted. She told him she could not meet because he was a teacher.
Justice Joseph F. Kenkel noted in his April 30 decision from Newmarket that Paniccia responded by saying she broke his heart, making her feel badly. Despite her wishes, they met a third time on Feb. 15, 2024, at 10:30 p.m. in a secluded commercial parking lot. The teen agreed only to talk, but Paniccia disregarded her wishes and sexually assaulted her, including digital penetration and oral sex. He remained fully dressed and told her to keep watch.
Aftermath and Sentencing
The teen was upset and told Paniccia via text that she was disgusted. He replied that meeting in his car was 'so much fun.' She threatened to tell the vice principal, and Paniccia begged her not to, saying it would ruin his life. The judge stated, 'The breach of trust in this case was significant. She felt and continues to feel a deep sense of shame and isolation.'
Paniccia was sentenced to three years in prison. The case highlights the severe consequences of teacher-student exploitation and the importance of protecting vulnerable students.
