Wiikwemkoong First Nation has announced a new policy to ban individuals involved in recent weapon and drug-related incidents from the community for a minimum of two years. The decision follows an emergency council meeting held on May 4, prompted by a weekend shooting and multiple drug arrests.
Emergency Council Meeting
Chief Tim Ominika stated that the council convened urgently to address the escalating violence and drug activity within the community. The meeting resulted in a unanimous decision to impose a two-year ban on offenders, aimed at restoring safety and order.
Details of the Incidents
The weekend shooting, which occurred on May 2, left one person injured. Police responded to the scene and later arrested two individuals in connection with the incident. Additionally, a separate drug bust on Manitoulin Island led to charges against three women and one man, with approximately $126,000 worth of drugs seized.
Community Response
Chief Ominika emphasized that the ban is a necessary measure to protect community members and deter future criminal activity. “We cannot allow a few individuals to jeopardize the safety and well-being of our entire community,” he said. The ban will be enforced through community by-laws and cooperation with local law enforcement.
Residents have expressed support for the council’s decision, with many hoping it will lead to a reduction in crime. The community is also exploring additional measures, such as increased surveillance and youth programs, to address underlying issues.
Broader Context
The incidents in Wiikwemkoong come amid a rise in drug-related crimes across the region. Police have noted an increase in drug trafficking and violence, prompting calls for stricter penalties and community-based interventions.
