What looked like a scene from a missing girl movie unfolded on a Rexdale street Thursday afternoon, as Toronto Police rescued 14-year-old Esther after 13 days of searching. The miracle came through old-fashioned, boots-on-the-ground policing, according to authorities.
Tip Leads to Rescue
The breakthrough came Wednesday night when a tip placed Esther at a Walmart near Rexdale Blvd. and Islington Ave. Police reviewed security footage and believed she walked into a nearby residential neighborhood. Officers then conducted a thorough canvass, checking neighbors' security cameras.
One resident described the scene: "They went up and down the street to check for video. Suddenly, they were all running toward a house. Six officers and five police cars arrived." Within moments, a man in his 30s was escorted out and placed in a police car, followed by Esther, who appeared to be walking fine, wearing a black hoodie and jacket.
Community and Police Collaboration
Supt. Don Belanger confirmed Esther was found safe and taken to hospital for evaluation. Police are investigating potential criminality. The home's owner, Devon, said he was at work and unaware of the situation. His tenant, known as Duffy, who lived in the basement apartment, was taken to a police division for questioning.
Toronto Police Association President Clayton Campbell praised the effort: "I'm so proud of our members who worked tirelessly around the clock. From frontline officers to investigative experts, no one ever gave up." He also emphasized the importance of community support in achieving the happy outcome.
Ongoing Investigation
While many questions remain, including why Esther was at the house and whether charges will be laid, the priority now is her recovery. The Jewish community, along with Shomrim Toronto, had distributed posters citywide, contributing to the search. Campbell noted, "They couldn't have done this without community input and support."
The rescue stands as a testament to diligent police work and community vigilance, with calls for awards for the officers involved.
