Body found after fire at abandoned Longueuil building

A late-night fire at an abandoned building in Longueuil has resulted in a grim discovery, with firefighters locating a lifeless body while battling the blaze.

Firefighters Make Macabre Discovery

The incident unfolded on Saturday night, December 6, 2025, on St-Charles St. W. in Longueuil. According to Longueuil police spokesperson Jacqueline Pierre, the fire ignited under the building's balcony shortly before 11 p.m. Fire crews responded and, while extinguishing the flames, made the tragic discovery of an inanimate body inside the structure.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not yet established the identity of the deceased, Pierre confirmed. Early Sunday television footage from the site showed a burned-out propane canister among the debris, though its connection to the fire's origin remains part of the ongoing investigation.

Police Investigation Underway

Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine both the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the death. Longueuil police were called to assist firefighters at the scene and have since taken charge of the inquiry.

To facilitate the initial stages of the police work, St-Charles St. W. was closed to traffic between St-Jean and St-Sylvestre Streets. The closure allowed investigators to meticulously process the scene for evidence that could shed light on the tragic sequence of events.

Community and Next Steps

The discovery has cast a pall over the area, raising questions about the safety of derelict properties and the circumstances that led to the fatal incident. The investigation by Longueuil police is now focused on piecing together the timeline leading up to the fire and identifying the victim to notify next of kin.

As the probe continues, authorities are expected to examine all potential causes, from accidental origins to more suspicious possibilities. The presence of the propane cylinder will likely be a key point of forensic analysis. Further updates from the Longueuil police are anticipated as their investigation progresses.
