Walpole Island Man Faces Multiple Firearms Charges in Sarnia Court
A 26-year-old Walpole Island man, Thomas Altiman, is currently being held at the Sarnia Jail on a series of serious firearms and driving-related charges, and has expressed significant frustration during his initial court appearances. Altiman was arrested on Tuesday following a traffic stop conducted by Walpole Island police on Chiefs Road just before 3:30 p.m. on March 31.
Courtroom Frustration Evident
Altiman appeared in a Sarnia courtroom on Wednesday, which handles recent arrests and bail hearings, where he complained of being tired and sore. He was visibly upset upon learning he would remain in custody until Thursday. "(Expletive) sakes," Altiman said as security led him out of the courtroom. "You guys are (expletive) useless." Justice of the peace Helen Gale responded, "Well, we try." Altiman added another expletive before departing.
During his Thursday appearance via video link from the Sarnia Jail, Altiman's frustration was again apparent. Wearing an orange jumpsuit, he covered his face with his hands and laid his head down on the table in the jail's video suite. His case was adjourned, and he remains in custody with a bail hearing scheduled for Tuesday at the Sarnia courthouse, according to online court records.
Charges and Arrest Details
The Lambton Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) issued a press release last week regarding Altiman's arrest, though specific details about the alleged incident were limited. Provincial police indicated that "further testing was required" and they were "engaged to assist" after the initial traffic stop. A vehicle was impounded for one week, and a driver's licence was suspended for three months as part of the investigation.
According to the OPP, Thomas Altiman faces the following charges:
- Impaired driving
- Failing or refusing to provide a breath sample
- Two counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Two counts of knowing there was a firearm in a vehicle while being an occupant
- Two counts of transporting a firearm, weapon, prohibited device, or ammunition in a careless manner
- Two counts of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Mischief worth less than $5,000
- Driving without a licence
- Driving with an open container of liquor
It is important to note that these charges have not been tested in court, and Altiman is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Legal Proceedings Continue
The case highlights the ongoing legal process involving firearms offenses and related charges in the Sarnia area. Altiman's repeated expressions of frustration during court appearances underscore the personal strain often associated with such proceedings. As the case moves forward, further details may emerge during the scheduled bail hearing and subsequent court dates.
