A 28-year-old Toronto man is accused of murder after a double shooting on Monday in Scarborough left one man dead and the alleged shooter with critical injuries.
Victim identified
The deceased has been identified as Levon Byers, 32, of Toronto. He was pronounced dead at the scene after police responded to a shooting just after 3:15 p.m. in the Victoria Park Avenue and Highway 401 area, near an apartment building on Terraview Boulevard.
Second shooting scene
Police then received a second call about a shooting in the Victoria Park Avenue and Sheppard Avenue East area, about one kilometre north of the original crime scene. There, a man who had been operating a vehicle was found near a TD Bank branch with gunshot wounds. He was transported to hospital in critical condition. A firearm was allegedly found in the vehicle, police said. The man is now in serious but stable condition.
Charges laid
The second victim has been identified as Hakim El Mozazi, 28, of Toronto. He was originally charged with possession of a firearm without holding a licence, possession of a restricted firearm knowingly not holding a licence, occupying a motor vehicle with a firearm inside, and possession of a loaded regulated firearm. On Tuesday, he was additionally charged with second-degree murder in connection with the city's 17th homicide of the year.
Duty Insp. Jonathan Rose said at the time that the incidents were related, but offered few details other than that no suspects were being sought after the shooting and that there was no danger to the public.
