The Ontario Special Investigations Unit has launched a probe into a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred in Kincardine on Saturday, resulting in the death of a suspect. Simultaneously, Hamilton police have charged a 28-year-old man in connection with an alleged hate-motivated assault in the city's downtown area.
Fatal Police Shooting Under Investigation
According to the Ontario Provincial Police, the incident in Kincardine unfolded at approximately 5:50 p.m. on Saturday. Officers from the South Bruce Detachment were attempting to arrest an individual who had been involved in multiple incidents earlier in the day across South Bruce and Huron County.
The OPP stated in a social media post that the individual was located at a residence on the Bruce-Saugeen Townline by officers from the emergency response team and the canine unit. During the interaction, police discharged their firearm, and the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The SIU, an independent civilian agency mandated to investigate incidents involving police that result in death, serious injury, discharge of a firearm at a person, or sexual assault, has taken over the investigation. Police have not yet released the identity of the deceased individual.
