An Ottawa driver was found to have a blood alcohol concentration nearly twice the legal limit following a single-vehicle crash in the city's west end early Wednesday morning.
Crash Occurs Just After Midnight
Emergency crews responded to the scene near the intersection of Dwyer Hill Road and Roger Stevens Drive just after midnight on Wednesday, December 3, 2025. According to the Ottawa Police Service, a vehicle had left the roadway, crashed into a ditch, and then struck a hydro pole.
Driver Arrested and Tested
The driver, identified only as a person in their 40s, was arrested at the scene. A mandatory alcohol screening test revealed a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 130 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit in Canada is 80 milligrams.
Police did not report any injuries resulting from the incident. The crash caused damage to both the vehicle and the utility infrastructure.
Police Issue Holiday Safety Plea
In a news release detailing the incident, the Ottawa Police Service took the opportunity to remind the public about the dangers of impaired driving, especially as social gatherings increase during the festive season.
"As we enter the holiday season, please plan a safe ride home if you intend to consume alcohol or drugs," police stated. The warning underscores the ongoing campaign to prevent tragedies caused by driving under the influence.
The case remains under investigation, and charges are expected to be laid against the driver.
