Second-Degree Murder Charge Following Fatal Assault
Edmonton police have formally charged an individual with second-degree murder in connection with the death of 20-year-old Lovondre Swampy. The charges stem from a violent incident that occurred in west Edmonton in May, which ultimately led to Swampy's death in Wetaskiwin approximately one week later.
Timeline of the Tragic Incident
The sequence of events began on May 22, when Edmonton Police Service officers responded to an assault report in the area of 65 Avenue and 172 Street at approximately 8 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered an injured man who has since been identified as Lovondre Swampy.
According to official police statements, medical treatment and support were offered to Swampy at the scene by both police and emergency medical crews. However, the young man declined to accept immediate medical assistance.
Investigation Transfers and Autopsy Results
Just over a week following the assault, Lovondre Swampy died in Wetaskiwin, prompting the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in that jurisdiction to initially take over the investigation. While an initial autopsy was performed, additional testing was required to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
Given that the original assault was reported in Edmonton, police authorities determined that EPS homicide detectives would assume control of the investigation. The case gained significant momentum on October 20 when the Edmonton Medical Examiner officially confirmed that Swampy's death was a homicide resulting from blunt force trauma.
The investigation culminated on November 20 when police obtained a warrant for a suspect in connection with Swampy's death. The following day, the individual voluntarily turned himself in to authorities, at which point Edmonton police formally charged him with second-degree murder.
Due to the suspect being 17 years old at the time of the offence, their identity remains protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Police have confirmed that they are not seeking any additional suspects in relation to this homicide investigation.
