Man charged, teen wanted in Vaughan home invasion murder

A Mississauga man, who was out on multiple court-ordered release conditions, has been charged and a 16-year-old Toronto boy is wanted for the murder of an innocent father during a violent summer home invasion in Vaughan.

Charges Laid in Tragic Home Invasion

York Regional Police announced that Amir Wiam Mohammad Abuhmaid, 26, of Mississauga, faces a first-degree murder charge along with several other offences including breaking-and-entering with intent and robbery with a firearm. The investigation also identifies Jayshaun Williams, 16, of Toronto as a suspect wanted for first-degree murder.

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, August 31, 2025, when three individuals arrived at a home near Andreeta Drive and Barons Street in a stolen Honda from Toronto. They forced entry through a back door while Abdul Aleem Farooqi, 46, was asleep inside with his family.

Father Killed Protecting His Family

Farooqi, who owned a furnace and duct cleaning business in Mississauga, confronted the intruders to protect his wife, son, and two daughters. At least one of the home invaders was armed with a firearm.

The 46-year-old father was shot and killed during the confrontation. The suspects fled without taking any significant property, only cellphones belonging to three family members, which police later recovered.

Investigators have confirmed that the home was specifically targeted but emphasized that Farooqi had no involvement in criminal activity.

Multiple Suspects Facing Charges

In addition to the murder suspects, police have charged four other individuals in connection with the home invasion.

Jahvon St Patrick McNairn, 34, of Toronto, faces a charge of accessory after the fact of robbery with a firearm.

Three individuals are accused of operating the stolen vehicle used in the crime: Choszen Roshan Phillip, 25, of Toronto, and two 16-year-old boys who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. They all face charges of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween expressed significant concern during a news conference on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, revealing that the 26-year-old accused was out on four separate release orders at the time of the deadly home invasion.

Growing Concerns About Youth Crime and Bail Reform

"I'm incredibly disappointed that dangerous criminals are continuously released back into the community only to reoffend and re-victimize the public," Chief MacSween stated.

"What's also extremely concerning is that a 16-year-old youth is wanted in connection with this incident. We're seeing the perpetrators become increasingly younger while the severity of these crimes continues to escalate."

The police chief highlighted that this case exemplifies why police chiefs across Canada have been advocating for judicial system reforms. MacSween endorsed proposed federal legislation that would reform the current bail system, emphasizing the need for changes that prevent violent offenders from returning to streets and harsher penalties to deter criminal activity.

Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca expressed gratitude to police for their investigative efforts, stating that "This senseless act shattered a family and shook our entire community."

Ontario MPP Stephen Lecce, who represents the King-Vaughan riding where the murder occurred, called for the "hardest punishment" for anyone convicted of such a "heinous" crime, noting that "To murder someone in front of a child and family is a special level of evil for which there should be serious jail time."

Homicide unit Insp. Paolo Fiore confirmed that the investigation remains active and police believe additional suspects may still be outstanding. Investigators are appealing to anyone with security or dashcam footage from the area or any additional information to contact the York Regional Police homicide unit or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
