Longueuil police are making a public appeal for information, concerned that a man arrested last month and now facing 17 sexual offence charges may have more victims who have not yet come forward.
Suspect Faces Multiple Charges Involving Minors
Stéphane Croteau, 58, was taken into custody on December 6, 2023. His arrest is connected to a series of alleged sexual offences that police say occurred in the greater Montreal area since 2020. The investigation has already identified approximately 30 potential victims.
Croteau remains in custody and is confronting 17 criminal charges. The majority of these charges involve minors. The specific accusations include:
- Possession of child pornography
- Production of child pornography
- Sexual assault
- Sexual touching
Alleged Offences Occurred Online and In Person
Police have detailed some of the methods allegedly used by the suspect. Investigators state that one young girl was approached in person on Montreal's South Shore, both at a local business and on a street near a school.
The investigation also reveals a significant online component. Police allege Croteau used dating websites, including sugardaddy.com and secretbenefits.com, to make contact. On these platforms, he is said to have used the online alias "Papadamour." Authorities further allege that some interactions were recorded without the knowledge or consent of the individuals involved.
Police Believe More Victims May Exist
The appeal to the public, issued on January 8, 2024, stems from a belief that other people may have been victimized. Longueuil police stated it is "quite possible" other potential victims were approached within their jurisdiction or elsewhere in the Montreal region.
