A late-night patrol in Kitchener took a dangerous turn when an alleged impaired driver decided to make a run for it—straight into a police cruiser.
The incident unfolded around 11:30 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Highland Road West and Spadina Road, where officers from the Waterloo Regional Police Service had initiated a traffic stop.
According to police reports, the driver of the suspect vehicle attempted to flee the scene, but their escape plan backfired spectacularly when they collided with the very police cruiser that had pulled them over.
Multiple Charges Filed After Dramatic Arrest
The failed escape attempt led to immediate apprehension by officers at the scene. Police confirmed the driver now faces multiple serious charges, including:
- Operation while impaired
- Operation while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration over 80 milligrams
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
- Failure to stop after an accident
Fortunately, no injuries were reported despite the vehicle collision, though the police cruiser sustained visible damage in the impact.
Ongoing Battle Against Impaired Driving
This incident highlights the continued challenges law enforcement faces in combating impaired driving across Ontario communities. The Waterloo Regional Police Service has repeatedly emphasized their zero-tolerance approach to driving under the influence, yet such encounters remain alarmingly common.
The accused driver has since been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in a Kitchener court at a later date to answer to the charges.
Police are using this incident to remind the public about the severe consequences of impaired driving, not just for those behind the wheel but for innocent bystanders and law enforcement officers who put their safety at risk every day.
