A disturbing hit-and-run incident in Guelph's west end has resulted in multiple charges against a local driver after a teenage pedestrian was struck and left at the scene.
The collision occurred around 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday near the intersection of Edinburgh Road and Imperial Road North, an area known for its residential character and pedestrian activity.
According to Waterloo Regional Police, a 49-year-old Guelph woman allegedly struck the teen with her vehicle and then fled without stopping to render assistance or provide information.
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, where they found the injured teenager. Fortunately, the young victim sustained only minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.
Charges Laid Following Investigation
Police launched an immediate investigation into the incident, which led to the identification and arrest of the driver involved. The 49-year-old woman now faces serious charges including:
- Failure to stop after an accident
- Careless driving
- Driving with an expired permit
The combination of charges highlights the severity of the incident, particularly the decision to leave the scene without checking on the welfare of the pedestrian.
Community Safety Concerns
This incident has raised concerns among Guelph residents about pedestrian safety, especially during evening hours when visibility decreases. The area where the collision occurred sees significant foot traffic from local residents, including students and families.
"Hit-and-run incidents are particularly troubling because they demonstrate a complete disregard for human safety," noted a police representative during the investigation.
The accused driver is scheduled to appear in court at a later date to answer to the charges. Meanwhile, police are reminding all drivers of their legal and moral responsibility to remain at the scene of any collision and provide assistance when needed.
