A quiet street in St-Hubert became the scene of a horrific crime early Sunday morning, resulting in the death of an elderly man and injuries to his wife following a violent home invasion.
A Tragic 911 Call in the Early Hours
According to Longueuil police spokesperson Jacqueline Pierre, authorities received a distress call from a residence on Renaud Street just after 2 a.m. Emergency services rushed to the scene, where they discovered an elderly couple who had been attacked inside their home.
The couple was urgently transported to a hospital for treatment. The husband, who had sustained critical injuries during the assault, succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead at the medical facility. His wife suffered injuries to her upper body, but police confirmed her life is not believed to be in danger.
Investigation Underway, One Person Detained
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, police detained a woman at the scene. She was to be met by investigators for questioning. Authorities have not publicly disclosed any potential link between the detained individual and the elderly victims.
While police have been cautious with official details, media reports citing sources indicate the male victim was 88 years old and his wife was 86. The reports also described the person detained as "a young woman." Longueuil police declined to elaborate on this information, which had circulated on social media platforms shortly after the event.
Police Presence and Street Closures
The investigation into this fatal home invasion is now in its initial stages. The Longueuil police's forensic identification division was deployed to the residence to meticulously process the scene for evidence. The canine squad was also present to assist in the inquiry.
As a result of the ongoing police activity, a section of Grande-Allée Boulevard between Renaud and Melrose Streets was closed to traffic. Authorities stated the closure would remain in effect "for an indeterminate period" while their work continues. The quiet residential area was transformed into an active crime scene, unsettling the local community.
This tragic event has sent shockwaves through the St-Hubert neighborhood, raising concerns about safety and leaving residents mourning the loss of a longtime community member under violent circumstances.
