Charges have been laid against a driver who allegedly sped through a police barrier at the scene of a fatal pedestrian crash in Calgary, potentially compromising evidence and putting officers at risk, authorities reported on Wednesday.
Incident Details and Police Response
Early Wednesday morning, southbound Stoney Trail near McKnight Boulevard N.E. was closed as police investigated a fatal collision that occurred shortly before 11 p.m. on Tuesday. An adult male pedestrian was struck and killed on the freeway, prompting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances.
Around 2:45 a.m., a driver broke through the barricades that had been erected to secure the crime scene. According to the Calgary Police Service, the individual continued at a high rate of speed, driving through the area while officers were present. This action not only endangered the lives of the police personnel but also potentially destroyed crucial evidence related to the fatal incident.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
The driver was promptly arrested, and their vehicle was seized. Calgary resident Charanjit Ram, 39, now faces charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and obstructing a peace officer. Ram is scheduled to make a court appearance on May 13 to address these allegations.
In a news release issued Wednesday afternoon, police emphasized the seriousness of the situation. "Police often close roads after collisions to protect the officers at work and the integrity of the investigation," said traffic unit Inspector Robbie Patterson. "The barricades are there for a reason, and there is no excuse for drivers to ignore them."

Meanwhile, the investigation into the original pedestrian fatality continues. Police confirmed that the driver involved in that initial collision remained at the scene, and as of early Wednesday, investigators were still working to piece together the events leading to the tragic death.
