Car Crash Death Now Investigated as Homicide

The Delta Police Department has revealed that a fatal vehicle incident last month is now being treated as a homicide case. What initially appeared to be a tragic accident has transformed into a murder investigation following extensive work by major crimes investigators.

Mandeep Kaur, a 30-year-old Delta resident, was discovered deceased following a vehicle crash and subsequent fire that occurred on October 26. Emergency responders arrived at the scene located in the 7000-block of Highway 17, just north of the Trans-Canada Highway, at approximately 11:20 p.m.

Arrest and Charges Filed Against Family Member

Police quickly identified suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident, prompting the Delta Police Department's major crime section to assume control of the investigation. Their inquiry led to the arrest of Gurjot Singh Khaira, 24, who is the victim's brother-in-law and also resides in Delta.

Khaira was taken into custody on November 6 and initially faced a charge of indignity to human remains. He has remained in custody since his arrest. In a significant development on Tuesday, prosecutors added a more serious charge of second-degree murder against Khaira.

Ongoing Investigation and Court Proceedings

With the legal process now underway, authorities have limited their public comments about the case. Khaira is scheduled to appear in court on December 11 to answer to both charges filed against him.

Staff Sgt. Mike Whiteley expressed the department's condolences in an official statement released Wednesday, stating: "The Delta Police Department extends its sincere condolences to the family of Mandeep Kaur during this difficult time."

As the investigation continues, police have indicated they will not be releasing additional information to preserve the integrity of both the ongoing inquiry and the forthcoming legal proceedings.
