Tragic Loss of a 'True Cowboy' in Highway Rescue Attempt

A British Columbia man known for his cowboy spirit lost his life in a heartbreaking incident on Wednesday evening. Hugh Loring, 49, of Riske Creek, was killed while trying to assist a driver trapped after a serious collision involving two semi-trucks.

Details of the Fatal Accident

The accident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Highway 20 near Meldrum Creek, about 25 kilometres west of Williams Lake. According to reports, the two large trucks collided, leaving one driver trapped inside a vehicle.

Loring, who was passing by, stopped to help rescue the trapped individual. Tragically, during the rescue attempt, the second truck suddenly became dislodged from the first and struck him, causing fatal injuries. Emergency responders were unable to save him.

A Life Remembered for Selflessness

Hugh Loring was widely recognized in the B.C. rodeo community. His obituary described him as embodying "the spirit of a true cowboy" and highlighted that his final act of trying to help others reflected his core values of courage, compassion, and duty.

"Hugh Loring was one of the last of the real ones — a cowboy, a mentor, and a man of unwavering character," the obituary stated. "His lessons, his laughter, and his love will live on through his family and all those fortunate enough to have known him."

Community Support and Family Grief

In response to the tragedy, Tito’s Western Wear in Williams Lake announced it would donate 100 percent of its sales on Friday to Loring’s family. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Shelly, and their sons Brandon and Tanner.

Shelly Loring expressed her profound grief in a Facebook post, writing, "27 years with him was not long enough. I have no idea what we are going to do. Hugh was (our) everything." She added that the family is trying to move forward, as Hugh would have wanted, but acknowledged the immense difficulty of his loss.

Investigation and Road Closure

The stretch of Highway 20 was closed for several hours following the collision. Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage from the area around the time of the crash to contact Williams Lake RCMP at (250) 392-6211 and reference file number 2026-2457.

This tragic event underscores the dangers faced by Good Samaritans during emergency situations and has left the local community mourning the loss of a beloved figure.
