Attacks on Alberta Premier Smith Boost Separatism, Letter Warns
Attacks on Smith Only Help Separatism, Letter Warns

A letter published in the Edmonton Journal on Friday argues that recent attacks on Premier Danielle Smith are counterproductive and only serve to bolster the Alberta separatist movement. The author, Aiden Whitford of Edmonton, contends that Canadian authorities are going to extreme lengths to damage Smith's leadership, including allegations of corruption, ties to businessman Sam Mraiche in a procurement fraud case, and calls from the Assembly of Treaty Chiefs for a treason investigation.

Federal Pressure Backfires

Whitford writes that these actions are likely to prompt Albertans to rally behind their premier, as the pressure mirrors decades of perceived mistreatment by Ottawa. He states, "Attacks on Smith’s authority will not only fail to suppress separatism but will strengthen it." The letter suggests that most allegations lack substance and that some facts are fabricated, further alienating Albertans.

Other Letters: Carney Bailout and Federal Funding

In a separate letter, Craig Beieler of Edmonton criticizes federal leader Carney for bailing out Vancouver condo developers who refused to sell at a loss, sarcastically requesting a similar bailout for his unwanted scooter. Another letter by Abram Wiebe of Champion addresses claims that Alberta would lose federal services if it separates, asserting that Alberta contributes more to Ottawa than it receives, making the province a net funder of federal programs.
