A mother and daughter from British Columbia who were detained at an immigration facility in Texas have been granted bond, according to the woman's husband. Tania Warner and her seven-year-old daughter Ayla Lucas have spent over two weeks in custody after being taken into custody at a U.S. border patrol checkpoint in Sarita, Texas on March 14.
Bond Granted for Release
On Tuesday, Warner's husband Edward Rose announced that a judge had granted bond for both Warner and her daughter at US$9,500. Rose is currently working to gather the necessary funds and expects to pay the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) bond on Wednesday, with hopes of being reunited with his family on the same day.
"It was good news," Rose stated, "even if it meant going thousands of dollars into debt." Similar to bail, the ICE bond permits the mother and daughter to be released from custody while they await an immigration hearing.
Background of the Detention
Warner and Rose met online approximately five years ago, leading Warner to move from Penticton, British Columbia to Texas. The couple married about a year later and now reside in Kingsville, Texas. Warner, who works as a self-employed fitness and nutrition coach, is in the process of obtaining her U.S. green card, which would grant her permanent residency.
Despite possessing a valid "employment authorization" card that is effective until 2030, Warner was accused by ICE of overstaying her visa. Following their detention at the border patrol checkpoint, Warner and Ayla were initially taken to an ICE detention facility in McAllen, Texas before being transferred to another facility in Dilley, located about a two and a half hour drive from Kingsville.
Circumstances of the Arrest
The detention occurred as Warner and her daughter were returning home from a baby shower. The situation has drawn attention to the complexities of immigration procedures and the challenges faced by families navigating the U.S. immigration system.
As the family prepares for the bond payment and subsequent release, they await further developments in their immigration case. The bond approval marks a significant step toward reunification, though the legal process continues.
