President Donald Trump flew back from Turkey on an older Air Force One aircraft, rather than the newer Qatari-gifted jet, in a surprise aircraft swap before departing Ankara International Airport on Wednesday.
NATO Summit Departure
The switch occurred after the NATO summit, where Trump met with allied leaders. The older Boeing 747-200B, designated VC-25A, was parked on the tarmac while the newer, Qatari-gifted Boeing 747-8i remained unused.
According to White House officials, the swap was a last-minute decision. No official reason was given, but speculation centers on maintenance or security preferences.
Aircraft Background
The Qatari-gifted jet, a modified Boeing 747-8i, was delivered to the U.S. government in 2025 as a gift from Qatar. It features advanced communications and defensive systems. The older Air Force One has been in service since 1990.
“The president decided to use the legacy aircraft for this leg of the journey,” a White House spokesperson said.
Implications
The swap raises questions about the reliability and integration of the gifted jet into the presidential fleet. The U.S. Air Force has not commented on whether the aircraft experienced technical issues.
