FIFA’s disciplinary committee took the unprecedented step of overturning a one-match suspension for U.S. striker Folarin Balogun after President Donald Trump directly intervened with FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The reversal, which cleared Balogun to play in the knockout stage against Belgium, has drawn sharp criticism from UEFA and raised alarms about political interference in soccer’s governing body.
Trump’s intervention and the red card controversy
During a World Cup group-stage match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Balogun received a red card for an aggressive foul. Trump quickly politicized the incident, publicly berating the referee and escalating the controversy. He declared that if the U.S. team lost without its full squad, “I say it was rigged, just like the election was rigged in 2020.” Trump initially claimed he did not know what a red card was, while insisting that Balogun’s tackle “wasn’t a foul.”
The U.S. ultimately lost 4–1 to Belgium, ending their tournament run. But the damage to FIFA’s credibility had already been done.
UEFA condemns FIFA’s decision
UEFA, one of football’s most influential governing bodies, fiercely condemned FIFA’s move, declaring that FIFA had “crossed a red line” by interfering with a disciplinary decision that should have remained within established rules. UEFA called the decision “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable,” warning that it undermines the integrity of the tournament by inviting demands for similar treatment in future disciplinary cases.
“If FIFA is prepared to reverse an automatic red-card suspension, it has opened a Pandora’s box,” said Mohamed Fahmy, a lifelong soccer fan and commentator. “In a World Cup already characterized by inconsistent refereeing, selective use of VAR, and apparent favouritism, every disputed decision will now invite accusations of political interference.”
A dangerous precedent for FIFA
The controversy is unprecedented even by FIFA’s standards. The decision to overturn an automatic suspension based on a political leader’s request sets a dangerous precedent. Critics argue that FIFA has not merely overturned a suspension but has undermined confidence in the integrity of its own tournament. With the World Cup already facing scrutiny over refereeing and VAR inconsistencies, this episode adds a layer of political controversy that could have lasting implications for the sport.
