Trump Boasts About Fair Attendance, But Evidence Shows Sparse Crowds
President Donald Trump on Monday celebrated the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C., claiming it was “packed with happy people.” On Truth Social, he wrote, “Ask yourself this simple question,” followed by all caps: “‘DO YOU THINK THAT OBUMA OR SLEEPY JOE BIDEN COULD HAVE DONE IT?’ THE ANSWER IS NO!” However, footage and photos from the event, including a live broadcast on Fox News, showed only a smattering of people wandering the National Mall grounds. The Ferris wheel cast a long shadow over largely empty space, as captured by AP Photo/Jen Golbeck.
Insults Fall Flat Amid Trump’s Own Nodding Off Incidents
Trump’s jabs at his predecessors, particularly calling Joe Biden “Sleepy,” backfired given Trump’s own documented tendency to fall asleep in public. He urged people to “appreciate what a fantastic job we did” in organizing the fair, which he said “everybody” loved. Critics quickly mocked his demand for praise, highlighting the event’s lackluster turnout. Tennis legend Martina Navratilova tweeted, “He is totally delusional.”
Critics Point to Economic Woes and Partisan Takeover
Congressman Shri Thanedar noted, “Trump is bragging about putting a fair together because he's failed on the economy. Inflation has risen under his watch to the highest level in years. Job growth fell by more than 90% his first year back in office. Inflation is now outpacing wages. SAD!” Others pointed out that the fair was a partisan replacement for the non-partisan America250 committee created by Congress. Robert Graham tweeted, “Trump blocked America250 from doing anything and inserted his MAGA partisan Freedom250 instead, which celebrates Trump instead of America.”
Social Media Erupts With Mockery and Comparisons
Users compared the sparse attendance to the Obama library opening, with Danny Rockett tweeting, “More people are going to Obamas library than this sad and pathetic state fair that more than 20% of the states didn’t even show up to because the sad Orange Foolius turned it into a self aggrandizing grift.” Others noted that Obama or Biden would have drawn millions. One user wrote, “All 13 people who attended the Trump State Fair were very appreciative of the crummy job you did.” The mockery extended to Trump’s mental state, with a user comparing his posts to a “perpetual toddler pitching a never-ending hissy fit.”
Event Marked as Colossal Failure by Objective Standards
Jim Bennett stated, “The Great American State Fair is a ghost town. The whole celebration of America’s 250th is a colossal failure by any objective standard. Full stop.” The fair, intended to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary, was overshadowed by controversy and low attendance. Trump’s critics seized on the disconnect between his claims and reality, with many calling the event a “shitshow” and a “pathetic” display of narcissism.
