A Toronto police officer was seriously injured after being struck by a car on the Leaside Bridge early Monday morning, following an incident where police fired at a suspect vehicle.
Incident Details
The collision occurred around 6 a.m. on the Leaside Bridge, which spans the Don Valley. According to police, officers had earlier discharged their weapons at a suspect vehicle in the area. The suspect car then struck the officer before fleeing the scene.
Paramedics transported the officer to a trauma centre with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The officer is reported to be in stable condition.
Investigation Underway
Toronto police have launched an investigation into the shooting and subsequent collision. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which probes police actions resulting in serious injury or death, has been notified and is conducting a parallel investigation.
Police are searching for the suspect vehicle, described as a dark-coloured sedan. No arrests have been made as of yet.
The Leaside Bridge was closed in both directions for several hours as investigators combed the scene. Commuters were advised to use alternative routes.
Community Reaction
Residents in the area reported hearing multiple gunshots and a loud crash. One witness, who wished to remain anonymous, described the scene as chaotic and frightening.
Toronto Police Chief James Ramer expressed concern for the injured officer and assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted.
This incident marks the latest in a series of violent encounters involving police and suspects in the city. The SIU has urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.
