Statistics Canada reports that manufacturing sales increased by 4.2 per cent in April, reaching $77.1 billion. The growth was driven by gains in transportation equipment and chemical products, offsetting declines in other sectors.

Key Highlights

The rise in sales was widespread, with 13 of 21 industries reporting increases. Transportation equipment sales surged 8.5 per cent, while chemical products rose 5.2 per cent. On a year-over-year basis, manufacturing sales were up 3.1 per cent.

Regional Performance

Sales increased in nine provinces, led by Ontario and Quebec. Ontario saw a 5.6 per cent rise, while Quebec posted a 3.9 per cent gain. Alberta and British Columbia reported declines.

In constant dollar terms, manufacturing sales rose 3.9 per cent, indicating higher volumes. Inventories edged up 0.3 per cent, while the inventory-to-sales ratio fell to 1.51 from 1.56 in March.

Unfilled orders increased 1.8 per cent, driven by transportation equipment. New orders rose 2.5 per cent, suggesting continued momentum.

Analysts note that the manufacturing sector is benefiting from strong demand and easing supply chain constraints, though high interest rates and global uncertainty remain headwinds.
