Former U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell issued a stark warning on Sunday about the dangers of politicizing the central bank, calling for the defense of democratic institutions in his first public remarks since leaving the top post. Speaking at the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award ceremony, Powell emphasized that democratic institutions, while time-consuming to build, can be quickly dismantled.
Powell's Warning on Institutional Integrity
"Democratic institutions take much time, effort, and patience to build but can be torn down all too quickly," Powell said in prepared remarks. He stressed the importance of preserving what is good about these institutions, even as efforts are made to improve them. Powell singled out the Federal Reserve, along with courts and universities, as core institutions vital to the nation's success and global standing.
Stress Test for the Fed
Powell noted that the Fed has been undergoing a "stress test," which included attempts by President Donald Trump to fire Fed Governor Lisa Cook, calls for Powell's resignation, and a criminal investigation targeting Powell. Despite the end of his eight-year tenure as chair on May 15, Powell has chosen to remain as a Fed governor, partly due to ongoing threats to the central bank's independence. This decision effectively blocks Trump from appointing another member to the Fed board for now.
Importance of Independence
The Fed's structure is designed to insulate monetary policy from political influence. Powell argued that these protections have served the public well and have been respected by administrations from both parties. He warned that if any administration finds a way to remove Fed officials over policy disagreements, future administrations would follow suit, eroding public trust in the central bank's ability to make decisions solely in the best interest of all Americans.
Recognition of Courage
The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation earlier this year announced the award to Powell, praising him for safeguarding one of the country's most essential apolitical institutions and demonstrating extraordinary courage amid sustained personal and professional risk. This year, the award was also given to the citizens of Minneapolis and St. Paul for their public response to heightened immigration enforcement in the Twin Cities area, including protests and monitoring of government actions.
