In a bold statement on Monday, Pope Leo XIV declared he "will continue to speak out loudly against war," directly responding to President Donald Trump's social media attacks. The pontiff, the first U.S.-born leader in Catholic Church history, emphasized his unwavering stance on promoting peace and dialogue, adding that he has "no fear of the Trump administration."
Pope's Peaceful Message Amid Political Tensions
According to Reuters, Pope Leo XIV, who has been a vocal critic of Trump's war in Iran, condemned the killings of innocent civilians globally. He asserted, "Someone has to stand up and say there's a better way," highlighting his role as a peacemaker rather than a politician. Speaking on a flight to Algiers, he clarified, "The message of the church, my message, the message of the Gospel: Blessed are the Peacemakers. I do not look at my role as being political, a politician."
Trump's Social Media Onslaught
President Trump launched a scathing critique on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, labeling the pope "WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy." This post followed a "60 Minutes" report featuring three American cardinals discussing Pope Leo's emergence as an outspoken critic of Trump's policies, including the Iran conflict and mass deportation campaign. Trump wrote, "I don't want a Pope who criticizes the President of the United States because I'm doing exactly what I was elected, IN A LANDSLIDE, to do."
He further urged, "Leo should get his act together as Pope, use Common Sense, stop catering to the Radical Left, and focus on being a Great Pope, not a Politician." Previously, Pope Leo had called Trump's threats to erase Iranian civilization "truly unacceptable," escalating the diplomatic rift.
Pope's Defiant Response and Irony Noted
Despite the criticism, Pope Leo remained resolute. According to The New York Times, he stated, "I have no fear of the Trump administration, or speaking out loudly of the message of the Gospel, which is what I believe I am here to do." He also appeared to mock the name of Trump's social media platform, Truth Social, remarking, "It's ironic — the name of the site itself. Say no more."
Escalating Conflict and Public Statements
On Sunday night, Trump doubled down on his criticism in comments to reporters, calling Pope Leo a "very liberal person" and adding, "I'm not a fan of Pope Leo." He also posted an AI-generated image of himself as a Christ-like figure healing a man, further intensifying the public feud. Meanwhile, Pope Leo reiterated his commitment to "promoting dialogue and multilateral relationships among the states to look for just solutions to problems," as reported by Reuters.
This clash underscores the growing tension between religious leadership and political authority, with Pope Leo XIV positioning himself as a steadfast advocate for peace in the face of adversarial rhetoric from the White House.
