Toronto police are investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle in the city's west end early Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Jane Street and Eglinton Avenue West.
Victim pronounced dead at scene
Emergency crews arrived to find a man lying on the road with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle remained at the location and is cooperating with investigators.
Police have not released the identity of the victim pending notification of family. The cause of the collision is under investigation, and no charges have been laid at this time.
Road closures in effect
The intersection was closed for several hours as police conducted their investigation. It has since reopened. Officers are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
This marks the 15th pedestrian fatality in Toronto this year, according to police data. The city has been working on road safety initiatives, including Vision Zero, aimed at eliminating traffic-related deaths and serious injuries.
