A 28-year-old man has died following a waterfront altercation in Maple Ridge, according to authorities. The incident occurred at the Port Haney wharf, prompting a swift response from local police and emergency services.

Shortly before 7 p.m. on Sunday, Maple Ridge RCMP received reports of a fight at the Port Haney wharf, located in the 22300-block of River Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a man suffering from life-threatening injuries. Despite immediate medical attention from first responders, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Investigation Underway

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the case, collaborating with the RCMP serious crime unit, forensic specialists, and the B.C. Coroners Service. IHIT Sergeant Freda Fong stated, “Investigators believe this was an isolated and targeted incident, where the parties involved were known to each other.” Authorities have ruled out gang activity as a contributing factor.

Fong confirmed that a weapon was used during the altercation but declined to specify the type, citing the need to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. She praised the quick actions of Maple Ridge RCMP officers, which helped contain the scene and preserve crucial evidence.

Investigators are actively conducting witness interviews to reconstruct the events leading up to the fight. “A number of witness interviews are underway as investigators piece together the events leading up to the altercation.
