Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's planned first family trip to Britain in four years has been abruptly canceled at the 11th hour after the British government declined to provide police protection for the couple outside royal residences. An insider revealed that Harry is "distraught" and fears his children, Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, will not meet their grandfather, King Charles, due to safety concerns.
Security Concerns Derail Visit
The trip was intended to include events related to the Invictus Games in July. However, sources close to the prince said Sunday that he would not risk his children being "chased by paparazzi wherever they go from the moment they step off the plane." The source added that Harry is exploring every option to ensure his family's safety but acknowledges the visit is unlikely without proper security arrangements.
According to The Guardian, a source stated: "Their plans to see family, friends and visit various charitable causes close to the duke's heart have been pulled out from under their feet at the 11th hour. He's looking at every option to try and get the family here safely and keep them safe when they're on the ground. If he can find a way to do that, he will."
Missed Opportunity to Meet King Charles
The visit would have marked the first time King Charles has seen his grandchildren in person since 2022, during the platinum jubilee celebrations for the late Queen Elizabeth II. The source emphasized: "The hope is they can meet their grandfather, but there is no way that can happen if they are chased by paparazzi wherever they go from the moment they step off the plane. He won't put his children through that."
Harry has been engaged in a lengthy legal battle with Britain's Home Office over police protection, arguing that his family would not be safe in the UK without it. He ultimately lost that legal battle last year.
Strained Family Relations
Harry last saw King Charles, now 77, at Clarence House in London in September 2024, their first meeting since early 2024. The relationship between Harry and his family has been fraught with tension since the prince and Meghan decided to step back as working royals in 2020, a move popularly known as "Megxit." This created a bitter rift between Harry and his brother, Prince William, the heir to the throne.
After moving to California, Harry and Meghan made explosive accusations of racism against the royal family in a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey. They continued to air grievances in a 2022 Netflix series and Harry's 2023 memoir, Spare. In the book, Harry called William his "arch-nemesis" and alleged a physical altercation between them over Meghan's behavior. He also accused his stepmother, Camilla, of leaking stories to the media to improve her public image on her path to becoming Queen Consort.
These accusations reportedly infuriated William, who now refuses to communicate with his brother. In contrast, King Charles is said to be open to reconciliation with Harry, but only on his own terms.
