The Town of Aurora will remove Frank Stronach's name from the Aurora Recreation Complex following his conviction for sexual assault. Town council voted unanimously on Monday to strip the naming rights from the facility, which has been known as the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex since 2009.
Council decision
Mayor Tom Mrakas said the decision was made to reflect the community's values. "This facility should represent the best of our town, not be associated with someone convicted of such serious crimes," Mrakas said. The renaming process will begin immediately, with a new name to be chosen through a public consultation process.
Stronach, 93, was convicted on June 19, 2026, of sexual assault charges involving incidents dating back decades. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison. The conviction followed a lengthy trial in which multiple women testified about assaults that occurred between 1977 and 2008.
Background
The complex, which includes an arena, pool, and fitness centre, was named after Stronach in recognition of a $5 million donation from the Stronach Foundation. The donation was made when the facility was built. Town officials said they are reviewing legal options regarding the donation, but the naming rights agreement allowed for termination if the namesake was convicted of a criminal offense.
Stronach's lawyer said they plan to appeal the conviction. "Mr. Stronach maintains his innocence and will pursue all legal avenues," the lawyer said in a statement.
Community reaction
Residents have expressed support for the decision. "It's the right thing to do," said Aurora resident Sarah Thompson. "The centre is for families, and we don't want that name associated with such a horrible crime." The town will hold public meetings to gather input on a new name, with a final decision expected within three months.
