Bianca Andreescu and Katherine Sebov both secured victories in the second round of Wimbledon qualifying on Tuesday, putting them one win away from earning a spot in the main draw at the All England Club.
Andreescu Dominates in Straight Sets
Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion from Mississauga, Ont., defeated France's Elsa Jacquemot 6-2, 6-3 in just over an hour. The Canadian broke Jacquemot's serve four times and saved all three break points she faced. Andreescu, currently ranked No. 118 in the world, is seeking her first main-draw appearance at Wimbledon since 2022.
Sebov Edges Past Opponent
Sebov, a 24-year-old from Toronto, outlasted American Robin Montgomery 7-5, 6-4. Sebov, ranked No. 145, fired five aces and won 72 per cent of her first-serve points. She will now face either Spain's Nuria Parrizas-Diaz or Japan's Yuki Naito in the final qualifying round.
Canadian Men Also in Action
On the men's side, Alexis Galarneau of Laval, Que., and Montreal's Gabriel Diallo are also competing in qualifying. Galarneau plays his second-round match later Tuesday, while Diallo faces American Mitchell Krueger.
If any of the Canadians win their final qualifying match, they will join already-qualified countrymen Denis Shapovalov and Leylah Fernandez in the main draw.
