Eddie Goldenberg, who served as chief of staff to former Prime Minister Jean Chretien and played a pivotal role in negotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement, has died. He was 75.

Goldenberg was a trusted adviser to Chretien during his tenure from 1993 to 2003. He was instrumental in shaping Canadian trade policy, particularly during the NAFTA negotiations in the early 1990s. According to a statement from the Chretien family, Goldenberg passed away peacefully on July 8, 2026, surrounded by family.
Goldenberg was invested as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2014 for his contributions to public service and policy development. The ceremony took place at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

Prime Minister Mark Carney paid tribute, saying, 'Eddie Goldenberg was a brilliant mind and a dedicated public servant who helped shape modern Canada.' Chretien described him as 'an indispensable partner and dear friend.'
Goldenberg is survived by his wife and two children. A private funeral will be held in Ottawa.
