Driver killed after leaving vehicle on Hwy. 401 near Kingston

A driver is dead after leaving their vehicle following a crash on Highway 401 in Kingston, Ontario, the Ontario Provincial Police reported.

Crash and Fatal Sequence

The incident occurred late Tuesday night on the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 near Montreal Street. According to OPP, a single-vehicle crash initially took place. The driver then exited the vehicle and was subsequently struck by another vehicle.

Police confirmed the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the second vehicle remained at the location and is cooperating with investigators.

Investigation Ongoing

The OPP's Technical Collision Investigation unit has been deployed to reconstruct the events. The eastbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed for several hours for the investigation but have since reopened.

Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased pending notification of next of kin. No charges have been laid at this time, and police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.

“We urge drivers to remain inside their vehicles after a collision and wait for emergency responders,” said OPP in a statement. “Leaving the vehicle on a busy highway poses extreme danger.”
