Canada's national soccer team coach expressed confidence that injured star Alphonso Davies will participate in the 2026 World Cup, though he is unlikely to be fit for the tournament opener. The Bayern Munich left-back has been sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained during a recent club match.
Coach's Assessment
Speaking to reporters, the coach stated that Davies is making good progress in his recovery and remains a key part of Canada's plans. However, he emphasized that rushing the 25-year-old back for the first game would be too risky.
“Alphonso is a vital player for us, and we want him fully fit for the later stages of the tournament,” the coach said. “We expect him to play, but probably not the opening match.”
Injury Details
Davies suffered a grade two hamstring tear during a Bundesliga fixture last month. Medical staff have been monitoring his rehabilitation closely, and while he has resumed light training, full match fitness remains elusive.
Canada's World Cup campaign begins against Morocco on June 14. The team will then face Belgium and Croatia in Group F.
Team Impact
Davies' absence would be a significant blow, as he is considered one of Canada's most influential players. His pace and attacking prowess from left-back have been instrumental in the team's recent success, including their qualification for the tournament.
Alternatives such as Sam Adekugbe and Richie Laryea are being considered to fill the void if Davies is unavailable for the opener.
World Cup Ambitions
Canada is making only its second World Cup appearance, the first since 1986. The team aims to advance past the group stage for the first time in history, and having Davies available for crucial matches could be decisive.
The coach added, “We have a deep squad, but Alphonso brings something special. We'll manage his minutes carefully to ensure he can contribute when it matters most.”
