Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) found herself trapped in an awkward exchange with a reporter this week, as an elevator repeatedly foiled her attempts to escape questioning. Ben Hall, a journalist for NewsChannel 5, the CBS affiliate in Nashville, described the encounter as 'the most awkward interaction' he had ever had with the senator.
Hall explained that he had been invited to a Blackburn event where she was expected to take questions from reporters. When she did not, he followed her into a hallway and asked about her bid for governor. 'I am here on federal time,' Blackburn said as she waited for an elevator. Hall pressed: 'Well, you are refusing to debate your Republican opponents. Why won’t you debate your Republican opponents?'
Blackburn responded, 'We’re talking to Tennesseans every single day,' a phrase she repeated verbatim multiple times despite Hall's follow-up questions. The senator has not held an in-person town hall event since 2017.
Repeated Deflections
Hall asked about Blackburn's stance on subsidies for companies like Starbucks, referencing a controversial deal between the state and the coffee chain. 'Do you support subsidies for companies like Starbucks?' he inquired. Blackburn replied, 'We’re talking to Tennesseans every single day. Thank you.'
When Hall asked why she would not sit down for interviews, noting that his outlet had requested interviews multiple times, she gave the same answer: 'We talk to Tennesseans every day.' The exchange lasted 'an incredibly awkward one minute and 24 seconds,' according to Hall.
Elevator's Uncooperative Timing
Hall said he thought Blackburn was 'in the clear' when the elevator arrived. However, as she stepped inside, the doors popped back open, giving Hall another opportunity to ask a question. Blackburn again refused to answer, leaving the reporter to note that 'the elevator had other plans.'
Blackburn, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, is running for governor of Tennessee in the 2026 election. She has faced criticism from opponents for avoiding public debates and interviews.
