Alberta Halts EHS Rebrand to Alta Paramedic Health After Criticism
Alberta Halts EHS Rebrand After Backlash

Minister of Hospital and Surgical Health Services Adriana LaGrange has called off the recently announced rebranding of Emergency Health Services (EHS) following widespread criticism. The directive to halt the change was issued on Monday, June 8, 2026, LaGrange confirmed.

Rebranding Reversal

Last month, EHS revealed plans to rebrand to Alta Paramedic Health, which managing director Les Fisher said at the time reflected a broader shift in how paramedic services are being delivered. However, the move faced immediate backlash from front-line workers, opposition politicians, and the public.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, LaGrange stated, "I've heard questions from Albertans and front-line workers about the recent Emergency Health Services rebranding, and I share their concerns. This needs to be done at the right time and with the right input." She further assured that "no operational funding was spent by EHS-Alberta on this project. No additional changes have been made to uniforms, ambulances, or other assets since the launch."

Political Reactions

The NDP had called for an end to the rebranding earlier Wednesday, labeling it "wasteful." In a joint statement, opposition MPs Sharif Haji and Sarah Hoffman criticized the move, saying, "It shows just how out of touch the UCP is when it comes to meeting the needs of Albertans." They highlighted ongoing ambulance wait times, citing a recent case where a patient with a bleeding surgical wound was told an ambulance would take six hours and was advised to take a cab.

Haji and Hoffman urged the UCP to redirect rebranding funds toward recruiting and retaining healthcare workers, including paramedics. "Danielle Smith promised she would fix health care in Alberta in 90 days — that was more than 1,300 days ago. Since then, they have been focused on logos rather than reducing wait times and improving health outcomes," the statement added.

Front-Line Concerns

Groups representing Alberta's paramedics and first responders had also criticized the rebrand, arguing that it did nothing to address the daily challenges paramedics face. The reversal comes after mounting pressure from multiple stakeholders.

LaGrange's directive ensures that EHS will revert to its previous name and logo until further engagement with stakeholders is conducted. The minister emphasized that the decision was made to address concerns and ensure proper input before any future changes.
