The trial of a man accused of selling the firearm used in the fatal shootings of two Edmonton police officers in 2023 is set to begin on Monday.
Charges and Allegations
Dennis Okeymow, 19, faces multiple charges, including manslaughter, in connection with the March 16, 2023, killings of Edmonton Police Service Constables Travis Jordan and Brett Ryan. While Okeymow is not accused of pulling the trigger, authorities allege he sold the rifle to 16-year-old Roman Shewchuk, who carried out the deadly attack at the Baywood Park apartment complex. The incident concluded when Shewchuk shot the officers and then himself.
Background of the Case
Court documents reveal that Shewchuk is also suspected of shooting a Pizza Hut employee four days before the officers' deaths, as well as his mother shortly before police arrived at the scene. Both victims survived but sustained life-threatening injuries. Okeymow's trial is scheduled to last 10 days, with further details expected to emerge as proceedings unfold.
The case has drawn significant attention to the issue of illegal firearm sales and their devastating consequences. The Edmonton community continues to mourn the loss of Constables Jordan and Ryan, who were remembered as dedicated officers and beloved family members.
This trial marks a critical step in the legal process, as prosecutors seek to hold accountable those who allegedly enabled the tragic events. More information will be provided as the trial progresses.
