A fire at Wyndham Crossing Apartments in Edmonton has resulted in an estimated $1.1 million in damages, according to officials. The blaze broke out early Monday morning, prompting a swift response from emergency services.
Residents Share Harrowing Escape Stories
Two residents of the apartment complex recounted their narrow escape after waking up to find the building engulfed in flames. One tenant described hearing a loud crackling sound before seeing smoke seeping under the door. They quickly alerted neighbors and evacuated the premises.
Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said they had to crawl through thick smoke to reach the exit. 'I couldn't see anything, but I knew I had to get out,' they told reporters. Firefighters arrived within minutes and managed to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjacent buildings.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Edmonton Fire Rescue Services and the Office of the Fire Commissioner. Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have originated in a ground-floor unit, but no official confirmation has been provided.
No fatalities were reported, but several individuals were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. The Red Cross has been assisting displaced residents with temporary housing and other necessities.
The incident highlights the importance of working smoke alarms and fire safety plans. Authorities urge all residents to regularly check their smoke detectors and have an evacuation plan in place.
