Montreal police officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, was killed in the line of duty on June 22, 2026, during a shooting in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood. He leaves behind a 3-year-old child and a pregnant wife, according to Yves Francoeur, president of the Montreal Police Brotherhood.
GoFundMe raises over $104,000 in hours
A GoFundMe campaign launched by Ebuzer Kayhan to support Benredouane's family has raised more than $104,000 within four hours of its publication. The page, originally in French, states: 'It is with immense sadness and heavy hearts that we launch this fundraising campaign to support the family of our friend, colleague and brother-in-arms, who tragically died in the line of duty.'
The description adds: 'Behind the uniform was an exceptional man: a dedicated police officer, a loyal friend, a loving partner, and an extraordinary father. Today, he leaves behind a pregnant partner who was preparing to build a future with him, and a young child of only 3 years old who will grow up without his father.'
Details of the incident
The attack began when police responded to 911 reports of an armed man seen in a window of a Hilton Hotel. Upon arrival, officers came under fire from a gunman at ground level. Benredouane was killed in the shootout, and a civilian, 68-year-old Michel Mizrahi, also died. A second officer, a woman, was injured but is in stable condition.
Quebec's coroner identified the alleged shooter as Seth Scott Hatfield of Lethbridge, Alberta. A 104-page manifesto allegedly written by Hatfield has been circulating online.
Tributes and condolences
SPVM posted an online tribute: 'His passing is a great loss to our organization. His sense of duty, dedication, and professionalism will forever remain in our memories.' Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante called for stricter gun control in the wake of the shootings.
Benredouane, who joined the SPVM in 2021, is the first Montreal police officer killed in the line of duty since 2002.
