Jailed former U.K. pop star Gary Glitter is facing four new charges for historic sexual offences against a minor, announced by the Metropolitan Police on Thursday. The 82-year-old, whose real name is Paul Gadd, has been charged with unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl aged under 13 and three counts of indecent assault on a girl aged under 14.
Details of the charges
The charges relate to alleged sexual offences against a child between 1978 and 1981 at a residence in Kensington, according to prosecutors. Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Bethan David stated, “This follows allegations made by a woman relating to a period of alleged abuse that took place between 1978 and 1981. Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring this case to court and that it is in the public interest to do so.”
Glitter's lengthy criminal record
Glitter is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence after his 2015 conviction for attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault, and one count of having sex with a girl under 13 between 1975 and 1980. He was released on licence in 2023 but was recalled to prison weeks later for breaching conditions. In 1999, he was jailed for four months for possessing child pornography, and later moved to Cambodia, but was deported in 2002 due to suspected sex offences. In 2006, a Vietnamese court convicted him and sentenced him to four years in jail for committing obscene acts with two girls aged 10 and 11. He returned to England in 2008 after his release.
Upcoming court appearance
The glam-rock singer, best known for 1970s hits including “Rock and Roll” and “Do You Wanna Touch Me,” is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Aug. 5.
