Ex-volleyball coach convicted of CSAM may have more victims

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has uncovered new evidence suggesting that Steven Cabral, a 33-year-old former volleyball coach who pleaded guilty to child sexual abuse material (CSAM) charges in June 2026, may have victimized additional children.

Guilty Plea and Ongoing Investigation

Cabral was arrested in May 2025 and charged with transmitting, possessing, and accessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material. He pleaded guilty to all charges on June 15, 2026, and was released pending a sentencing hearing scheduled for October 2026. As part of his release conditions, he is prohibited from contacting anyone under the age of 16.

Despite the guilty plea, EPS continued its investigation and discovered information indicating that Cabral may have targeted more individuals. Sgt. Maciej Rocki of the EPS Northwest Patrol stated, “Following the court’s decision to release the accused after charges were initially laid, police continued their investigation and learned about new information that suggests that there may be additional complainants.”

Call for Additional Victims to Come Forward

EPS is urging anyone who may have been victimized by Cabral or who witnessed him violating his conditions to contact the police. Sgt. Rocki emphasized the difficulty of such conversations, saying, “We know that conversations with children are hard for family and friends to have when these matters arise, but we want to ensure that we are able to provide support and a safe environment for anyone who may have information to come forward and speak with police.”

Cabral’s sentencing is scheduled for October 2026. The EPS continues to investigate and encourages anyone with information to call 780-423-4567 or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
