Cold Lake RCMP shooting leaves suspect dead

On June 25, 2026, at 4:48 p.m., Cold Lake RCMP received a domestic call for service. Officers attended and determined the suspect had a firearm; two occupants of the residence were able to flee safely, according to an Alberta RCMP release issued Friday.

Altercation and fatal shooting

Communication attempts with the suspect were unsuccessful, prompting the Emergency Response Team to assist. An altercation occurred with police in which at least one officer discharged their service weapon, striking the suspect. The suspect was declared deceased at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident.

Investigation launched

In compliance with legislative requirements, the Police Review Commission CEO was immediately notified, launching an independent investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT). The RCMP stated it believes in accountability and transparency and will provide full support to ASIRT investigators. The RCMP has also initiated its internal review process to gather a full account of the incident, including training, policy, police response, and the officer's duty status. The RCMP is fully cooperating with ASIRT.

Previous incidents

According to RCMP releases, there have been several officer-involved shootings in Alberta in the past year. In two other instances, the shootings resulted in the death of the suspect. On July 27, 2025, Lac La Biche RCMP responded to a disturbance where a male suspect attacked an officer with a knife; the officer shot the man, and despite life-saving efforts, the suspect died at the scene. On July 18, 2025, Grande Prairie RCMP located an erratic driver who fled and became stuck in mud. When officers interacted with the male driver, he produced a firearm. At least one officer discharged their service weapon, striking the suspect. Life-saving efforts were attempted and STARS was notified, but the suspect was deceased at the scene.
