A British Columbia man has been arrested in France as part of a transnational investigation targeting India-based organized crime groups, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced Thursday.
Arrest in France
The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was taken into custody in France on July 9, 2026, following a coordinated effort between the RCMP and French law enforcement. He is wanted in Canada on charges related to his alleged involvement with criminal networks operating from India.
RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme confirmed the arrest during a news conference in Ottawa, stating that the investigation remains ongoing. “This arrest demonstrates our commitment to dismantling organized crime networks that operate across borders,” Duheme said. “We will continue to work with our international partners to bring those responsible to justice.”
Investigation details
The RCMP’s investigation, which began in 2024, focuses on India-based crime groups allegedly involved in drug trafficking, fraud, and money laundering. Authorities believe these groups have established cells in Canada, particularly in British Columbia.
Assistant Commissioner Brigitte Gauvin, who also spoke at the news conference, noted that the arrest was a significant breakthrough. “This individual is believed to have played a key role in facilitating illegal activities for these groups,” Gauvin said. “We are now working to secure his extradition to Canada.”
Extradition process
The suspect is currently in French custody and is expected to face extradition proceedings. Canadian authorities have 60 days to submit a formal extradition request. If extradited, he will face charges in a Canadian court.
“This case highlights the importance of international cooperation in combating organized crime,” Duheme added. “We will not allow Canada to be a safe haven for those who seek to profit from criminal enterprises.”
Impact on communities
The arrest has been welcomed by community leaders in British Columbia, who have expressed concerns about the influence of organized crime in the region. “This sends a strong message that law enforcement is taking these threats seriously,” said Vancouver City Councillor Sarah Kirby-Yung.
The RCMP has not disclosed further details about the investigation, citing the need to protect ongoing operations. However, officials confirmed that additional arrests are possible.
