The Toronto Blue Jays traded right-handed reliever Tommy Nance to the Minnesota Twins on Friday, acquiring third base/catching prospect Ryan Sprock and international pool space money in return, according to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez and Jeff Passan.
Trade details and timing
The deal was finalized hours before Toronto's series opener against the San Diego Padres on Friday night. Nance, 35, had been with the Blue Jays since signing as a free agent after the 2023 season. He made 32 appearances for Toronto this year, posting a 1-2 record with a 3.82 ERA over 33 innings.
Nance's best season with the Jays came in 2025, when he recorded a 1.99 ERA in 48 relief appearances. Over his three-year stint in Toronto, he became a reliable bullpen arm, though his career numbers include a 6-9 record and 4.25 ERA across 144 major-league appearances.
Who is Ryan Sprock?
Sprock, 21, was selected by the Twins in the eighth round of the 2025 MLB Draft. He has impressed in his first professional season, hitting .297 with five home runs and 38 RBIs over 67 games in Single-A. According to Mitch Bannon of The Athletic, Sprock led the Florida State League with an .855 OPS before his promotion to High-A last week. The prospect has primarily played third base and catcher, giving the Blue Jays organizational depth at both positions.
Impact on both teams
The Twins, in the thick of the playoff race, added a veteran arm to their bullpen. Nance brings postseason experience and a steady presence, having pitched for the Cubs, Marlins, and Blue Jays. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, add a young prospect with offensive upside as they look toward the future.
Toronto opens its series against the Padres on Friday night at 9:40 p.m. ET. Shane Bieber is scheduled to start for the Blue Jays, while left-hander JP Sears will pitch for San Diego.
