B'nai Brith Advocates for Royal Commission to Combat Antisemitism in Canada
Recent antisemitic incidents across Canada have heightened fears within the Jewish community, underscoring an urgent need for federal action. B'nai Brith Canada is calling on the government to establish a royal commission dedicated to investigating and addressing the surge in anti-Jewish hatred.
Escalating Crisis Demands Government Response
Simon Wolle, CEO of B'nai Brith Canada, emphasized the severity of the situation. "The crisis of antisemitism is untenable and must be investigated with the full force of government action," he stated. The organization has launched a petition urging Canadians to support the creation of a Royal Commission on Antisemitism, aimed at developing comprehensive strategies to combat this pervasive issue.
Recent Attacks Linked to International Events
A series of violent acts have been reported, with connections to global conflicts. On March 1, a Richmond Hill boxing gym owned by an Iranian anti-regime critic was targeted in a shooting, occurring hours after the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Two days later, gunfire erupted at Temple Emanu-El in North York, shortly after Purim services concluded, though no injuries were reported.
In Montreal, swastikas were spray-painted on Jewish-owned businesses overnight on March 5, including a pharmacy, butcher shop, and Kosher restaurant. Montreal police are currently investigating these acts of vandalism.
Historical Context and Ongoing Threats
The rise in antisemitic activities in Canada can be traced back to the October 7, 2023 Hamas terror attacks. Following these events, anti-Israel protests, university encampments, and intimidation marches have proliferated, targeting Jewish neighborhoods and institutions. Toronto Police have made over 460 arrests and laid more than 1,000 charges related to these demonstrations.
B'nai Brith has previously appealed to Prime Minister Mark Carney to initiate a royal commission, warning that Canada's escalating antisemitism creates a ripe environment for potential terror attacks, similar to the Bondi Beach massacre in Australia. Israel's deputy foreign minister has echoed these concerns, highlighting the need for a proactive governmental approach.
Call for Comprehensive Action
Wolle posed a critical question: "What will it take for the government to develop a whole-of-government approach to confront antisemitism?" He stressed that a Bondi-style attack on Jewish Canadians should not be the catalyst for action. The proposed commission would involve experts and community stakeholders to formulate effective measures against anti-Jewish hatred, ensuring the safety and security of Canada's Jewish population.
